You know you need to WASH your produce, right?

Produce is great!
Produce is healthy!
Produce should be washed!
Make this at home and you’re sure to be wealthy!

Like this little poem? Inspired by Emily Dickinson. We all know we’re supposed to wash our fruits and vegetables after taking them home from the market. When I’m feeling lazy about it, I like to remind myself of the sneezing shriveled up and balding woman who fondled every single honey crisp before settling on granny smith. That gets me right to the sink.

When washing, plain water just won’t cut it, whether your produce is organic or not. There are plenty of different washes you can buy in stores, but below you’ll find a remedy you can make in your very own kitchen with ingredients you likely already have in stock. This mix is fantastic because it will save you some moolah and make you feel like a chemist, too.

DIY: PRODUCE WASH

What you’ll need:
1 c white vinegar
1 TBS baking soda
½ lemon (squeeze juice)
1 cup water

Combine all ingredients and pour into a spray bottle. Spray and allow the solution to sit on your fruits and vegetables for five minutes before rinsing. Rinse with water to remove the spray and you’re good to go – or eat that is!

The goods:
Vinegar is anti-bacterial. Lemon is a natural astringent.
The best: Cheap, natural wash that is also environmentally safe and free from those nasty chemicals.
