Feeling a bit like an insomniac these days?

It happens to the best of us. We spend our nights tossing and turning and wondering where all the sheep ran off to. The anxiety of not sleeping makes it worse. Knowing full well the zombie that will be checking in for you at work the next day is enough to send you off into Ambien land.

Before you go running off to fill that prescription (we don’t want to hear about you showing up at the local bodega in your tighty-whiteys, with no recollection the next day), try this super yummy smoothie that will have you off into dreamland in no time.

THE SLEEPY-TIME SMOOTHIE

One mug of hot chocolate (organic, with 70% cocoa solids, unsweetened), made with whole milk. If you’re lactose intolerant use whatever works for you.

1 ripe banana (a banana is ripe when the skin is freckled)

2 teaspoons of honey

1 pinch of ground cinnamon

1 pinch of nutmeg

Combine everything in a blender and whip until smooth. Drink it while it’s still warm!

Real cocoa (not the stuff with the Swiss girl on the box, though she is pretty cute), is one of nature’s largest sources of phenylethylamine (PEA). PEA is a chemical that is created within the brain when we are in love – you know, that warm fuzzy feeling? Cocoa is also a fantastic source of the neurotransmitter called anandamide, “The Bliss Chemical,” which helps to make you sleepy and relax your body.  High levels of tryptophan in milk (the stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy) and casomorphins, which are opiate-like chemicals, relax the body. Cinnamon is an ace at balancing your blood sugar – necessary for a good night’s sleep. The high potassium content of the ripe banana will chill you out and relax your muscles. And finally, honey has been a relied upon sleep aid for thousands of years.

Sip it slowly and forget about those lousy sheep. Sweet dreams!
