As advertisers would have us believe, we couldn't possibly get through a workout without one of their Sports Drinks...

The truth is, their drinks are LOADED with sugar, high fructose corn syrup and not much in the way of electrolytes, making them anything but sporty….

Those drinks were originally formulated for athletes participating in professional sports who quite honestly need the extra sugar to get through the game. Unless you’re a player on a professional football team or running the NY Marathon, the extra calories are going to sabotage your efforts at the gym.

So what are the options?

The key is to get adequate hydration and incorporate electrolytes – potassium to be specific.

THE UGLY TRUTH

Here are the stats on some of the most popular sports drinks per 20 oz bottle:

Gatorade: 130 calories, 30mg potassium

Vitamin Water: 120 calories, 350mg potassium

SoBe Life Water: 100 calories, 0mg potassium

Vita Coco Coconut Water: 110 calories, 1300 mg potassium

There are waters on the market that electrolyte infused, there are electrolyte powders you can add to your water, and coconut water is the KING when it comes to hydration. Coconut water has more electrolytes than any drink out there, and its 100% natural. Always a great bet for the gym and a fantastic hangover cure to boot!
