Your best defenses a good offense...

Before you go running to get the flu shot (which doesn’t protect you from this year’s flu anyway and includes things like mercury and formaldehyde), drop by your local vitamin store and grab these essentials for your cold and flu survival kit.

Ester C: This is the “super food” your cells need to fight off viruses and bacteria.

  • During cold and flu season take 2,000 mg a day to strengthen your immune system
  • If you feel yourself getting sick, take 2,000 mg 3x a day to help your body fight off the infection. You may experience diarrhea – not a big deal (in Europe they use Vit C for constipation) – just reduce your daily dosage to whatever it was before the diarrhea occurred ex: 4,000mg you were fine, but 6,000 gave you that “uh oh” moment.

Vitamin D: In modern society unless you’re a park ranger, most of us don’t get enough Vit D the natural way from sun exposure. In 1945 Dr. Hope-Simpson did a study  on the correlation between flu outbreaks and the months when sun exposure was limited. He theorized that lower amounts of Vit D were responsible for these outbreaks, and in the year 2003 investigators confirmed that the good doctor was right; flu epidemics occurred during the colder seasons when getting Vit D was darn near impossible.

  • 5000 IUs of Vit D a day to prevent colds and the flu.

Echinacea: Get a good tincture of Echinacea Angustifolia.Echinacea stimulates your immune system to create more white blood cells, T-Cells, and macrophages – a.k.a your body’s immune defense army.

  • At the onset of cold and flu season you can take 3 droppers full in a small amount of hot water. Gargle then swallow once a day.
  • If you’re already feeling icky, you can do this 3x a day, but not for more than 2 weeks at a time.
  • Never take Echinacea for more than 2 weeks at a time. Take 2 weeks off in between, otherwise it loses its effectiveness in your body.

A Good “Food Based” Multi Vitamin: Garden of Life is a great brand! This means that the vitamin itself is made from food extracts as opposed to chemicals and who knows what else, like most commercial multis out there. Being food based, your body will recognize what you are taking and assimilate it easily. You can find these at your local vitamin store. Lastly, top this off with a FRESH juice combo of carrot, ginger and garlic daily, and your invisible defense shield is ready to go! Germs be damned!!

**Remember: one of the best ways of prevention is washing your hands regularly! Don’t touch your hands to your eyes, nasal cavity or mouth without first washing your hands.
